CSOs protest IMF-WB’s devastating projects and policies; and Indonesian govt’s violation of peoples’ rights
11 October 2018
CSO participants from around the world joining the Peoples’ Global Conference against IMF-WB (PGC) condemn the IMF-WB and Indonesian government’s collusion in violating the people’s right to development, expression and peaceful assembly.
“This is yet another evidence of closing space for CSOs in the development discourse,” said Nurgul Djanaeva of the Working Group on CSO Enabling Environment of the CSO Partnership for Development Effectiveness.
On October 10, PGC local host Kurniawan Sabar of INDIES raised at the CSO Townhall with IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde and WBG President Jim Yong Kim to uphold the peoples’ democratic rights and stop the Indonesian government’s attacks against PGC organizers and participants. Harassments and surveillance continued despite Lagarde’s admission that she has been aware of the PGC and seeking a “dialogue” to resolve the issue.
The various forms of intimidation, harassment and surveillance on the PGC organizers, participants, and venue and service providers have led to the cancellation of the PGC venue reservation.
“This is very unjust and unacceptable to us, people from the South. We directly experience IMF-WB’s destructive policies and projects and we are being silenced,” said Vitalice Meja who flew all the way from Africa to critically engage the IMF-WB and to join hands with other marginalized groups to raise their voices.
With no space to air their grievances, participating CSOs from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and sympathizers from the North are taking to the halls of the WB Annual Meetings to echo the calls of the Peoples’ Global Movement against IMF-WB: Hands off PGC! Let the PGC push through! Stop the attacks and uphold peoples’ rights!
“Development should be about us and the IMF-WB is bringing us just the exact opposite. IMF-WB, Pres. Jokowi, order your men to stop harassing us and let us hold our peaceful assembly” asserted Joan Salvador of the International Women’s Alliance.
